Galilee

The sun is in the trees
On my way to Galilee
There's a furnace I got to feed
And a garden gone to seed
Waiting due west
Is a pretty lady in little red dress
The sun is past her thighs
Her belly is slowly growing wide
It's a thought too big it hurts
How do I deserve
To love and to be loved by her
Everything that's ours
We're going to set ablaze in a signal fire
Til the ashes fall like snow on the hollers down below
And we pilgrims three
Four hundred miles into west Tennessee
Lend our family voice to sing
At the right hand of the King
And we stand before the throne
A trinity all my own
A mother, a daughter, and a rolling stone
I'd been walking through the wilds
Just me, the moon, the wind, and pines
And the dawn of every day
Was worth less than a shadow cast in a cave
I heard her voice coming off the ridge
And I shed my skin
I came down off the mountain
And I'm counting miles and miles and miles and miles again
Maybe I'll retrace my steps
Walk back across the Commonwealth
From the Allegheny peaks
To the shores of the Chesapeake
Whatever I had lost
To the battlefields and rats and rocks
By now they've washed away
And they're lying on the bottom of the Bay
It's a thought too big to end
You can wander as far out as you can
Just to find your way back home again.
